Wilmy Weekly: October 15th
AccessWilmington.com launches Monday, plus Autumn With Topsail, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Oktoberfest wiener dog races and more!
Halloween is two weeks and we've got news of our own: AccessWilmington.com officially launches Monday, Oct. 19. It's the local guide behind most of the links in this newsletter, with hundreds of events, live music, food trucks and places to eat and drink, all in one spot. This weekend it can point you to a three-day festival at Topsail Beach, guitar fireworks at Greenfield Lake, wiener dog races and a zombie 5K. Keep reading to plan your next four days.
Same team, new home base: the folks behind Wilmy Weekly also run AccessWilmington. Start on the homepage, where the hottest upcoming events are front and center with filters to narrow them down by what you're in the mood for. Enter ticket giveaways for shows around town, browse local businesses or find out where the food trucks are parked tonight. Bookmark it Monday and take it for a spin.
Congratulations to Shady Surfer winner of last week's two free movie tickets to The Point 14! Keep a watch on your email, Shady. I'll be getting in touch with you soon.

🎃 Find the Best Halloween Houses on the Treat Map
Nextdoor's Treat Map is back through Oct. 31, and it's the easiest way to plan your route. Neighbors pin their homes if they're handing out treats or going all out on decorations. Local spots pin trunk-or-treats and Halloween events.
New this year: You can filter the map. Look for houses with non-food treats (great for kids with allergies), pet treats or doors that open early.
Show off your yard: Open the Nextdoor app, go to the Treat Map and add a pin for your home or a local event.
Good to know: Pins come from neighbors and aren't verified, so double-check event times before you go.
Got a house that goes all out? Hit reply and tell us. We may feature the best Wilmington Halloween displays before the 31st.

Wilmington News and Updates
Ironman 70.3 closes downtown roads starting today: Water Street between Market and Princess closes at 8am Thursday and stays closed until 8pm Saturday, along with Princess from Water toward Front. Hanover Street between North Front and North Second closes Friday at 8am. On race day (Saturday) parts of North Second, Brunswick, Hanover and Front streets close as early as 3am, and the I-140 ramps to and from US-421 are closed 7:30am to 1:30pm. Plan around it if you're heading downtown this weekend.
Smoke on the Water is moving downtown: The riverfront spot at Riverlights is closing around Oct. 28 after the property sold. Owner Diane Smith says she plans to reopen downtown and bring all her employees with her. No address or opening date yet, so this is your last call for lunch with that river view.
What's in the $320 million school bond: Early voting starts tomorrow, and the New Hanover County Schools bond is on the ballot. The biggest pieces are $94.7 million for a new Trask Middle, $59 million for repairs at New Hanover High and $56 million to replace Pine Valley Elementary. It also covers a new Mary C. Williams Elementary near Riverlights, an addition at Porter's Neck Elementary and $10 million in security upgrades. Read more for the superintendent's Q&A.
Wrightsville Beach bridge work gets started: NCDOT awarded the first contract in its $105 million plan to replace three aging Wrightsville Beach bridges. Phase 1 is the West Salisbury Street bridge over Lees Cut. A waterline relocation comes first (4 to 8 weeks), with bridge construction starting before the end of the year. The full project wraps up between 2030 and 2032.
Carolina Beach lands $3.5 million for a coastal park: The New Hanover Community Endowment awarded the town $3.5 million toward a coastal park and event stage. Town officials say the grant won't cover the full cost and the plans are still preliminary. No timeline yet.
