Wilmington News and Updates
Opa by Giorgios opens Monday on the Cape Fear River: Giorgios Bakatsias' newest restaurant, a coastal Greek and Mediterranean spot at 14 Harnett St. downtown, held its soft opening Oct. 28 with a ribbon cutting alongside Mayor Bill Saffo. The official opening is Nov. 2, and you can reserve a table at opabygiorgios.com starting then.
Free mulch is yours for the loading: The city's final mulch giveaway of 2026 is Friday, Oct. 30, from 8am to 2pm or until supplies run out. Head to the overflow lot behind Legion Stadium at 2149 Carolina Beach Road and enter from West Lake Shore Drive (right turn only). Bring a shovel because loading is on you, and leave commercial trucks at home. It is open to all area residents, not just folks inside city limits.
Last call for early voting: In-person early voting ends at 3pm Saturday, Oct. 31. Bring a photo ID and check New Hanover County's wait time tracker before you go.
Fall back this weekend: Daylight saving time ends at 2am Sunday, Nov. 1, so you get an extra hour of sleep. Phones and computers adjust on their own, but appliance and car clocks may need a manual change.
CFCC's research vessel is headed for a second life as a reef: Cape Fear Community College plans to donate the R/V Cape Hatteras to the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries. The ship would be sunk about 18 miles off Wrightsville Beach as habitat for marine life and a spot for fishing and diving. Preparation will take three to four months, with deployment tentatively planned for spring.
Brunswick Nuclear Plant emergency zones are being redrawn: The number of zones grows from 13 to 20 inside the same 10-mile planning area, so some properties will get new zone numbers. Duke Energy's updated interactive map goes live Monday, Nov. 2 and postcards go out in early November. Questions can go to Brunswick County Emergency Management at 910-253-5383.
